Ohligsberg is the vineyard nearly every German grower names when asked about the very top sites of the Mosel, and this is the bone-dry version from one of the region's most talked-about young winemakers. It's a steep, south-facing site in the village of Wintrich on weathered blue and gray slate that soaks up heat and drains hard — but parts of it tuck into a side valley where cool breezes slide down, which is why the wines come out powerful and dark-fruited without giving up an ounce of firmness or electricity. Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation Mosel winemaker, farms his family's Geierslay estate plus his own micro-project of just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels, and he trained with Julian Haart — you can taste the rigor. He works this in a Grosses Gewächs-like style without the official GG label; Mosel growers themselves reach for Willi Schaefer's Domprobst as the comparison for its taut architecture. And 2023 rewarded exactly his kind of discipline: an exacting year with a fine line between ripe and over-ripe, where the growers who braked and closed out harvest before crossing that line made superb dry Grand Cru wines — arguably a breakthrough vintage for dry Mosel Riesling.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation winemaker on the Mosel, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. He farms his family's Geierslay estate and his own micro-project—just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. His Rieslings taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for the table: roast chicken with lemon and thyme, pork schnitzel, trout with brown butter and almonds, scallops seared hard, or a plate of cured ham and aged Gouda. Also excellent with Thai green curry or Sichuan cold noodles, where the dryness and acid cut through chili and fat.

Tasting Profile

Dry and taut, with a firm mineral spine rather than any sweetness. The fruit tone runs darker than most Mosel Riesling — more stone fruit than lime — and the finish is long, stony, and clean.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
