This is Mosel Kabinett the way it used to be made, from a house that never saw a reason to change. Alfred and Rolf Merkelbach were still tending the vines well into their seventies, making the wines with little help, before they sold to the Selbach family. Sebastian Selbach and his father Johannes agreed to keep doing things the old way, in the brothers' old fuder. (The one real change is that fermentations now start on their own yeasts, where the brothers used cultivated yeast.) Ürziger Würzgarten, the "spice garden" of Ürzig, is one of the steeper vineyards in the valley. It curves into an amphitheatre of red slate that turns the whole hillside crimson. When most of the slope was replanted during flurbereinigung (the re-alignment of the vineyards), Merkelbach's vines stayed on their original rootstock. Plenty of Kabinetts have drifted riper as summers get warmer and tastes change, but this house's have stayed refreshing, and that's exactly why we keep coming back. It's off-dry, not a dessert wine.

More about Merkelbach

Time travel in tiny cellars. The Merkelbach brothers (now continuing under the Selbach family) crafted Mosel Rieslings the way they were meant to be—fresh, delicate, true. They fermented in traditional 1200-liter oak casks, aged on original rootstock, and didn't fiddle. Their vines averaged 45 years old; their approach even older. In a region chasing glamour and oak, Merkelbach kept the faith in pure, salty refreshment.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pork with apples, smoked trout, or schnitzel with lemon. It's also great with Thai green curry, Sichuan dan dan noodles or anything else with real chili heat.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Ürziger Würzgarten profile: peach, apple and citrus with the site's signature hint of spice and a savoury, slaty minerality. It's light-bodied and gently off-dry, with the sweetness balanced by bright, mouthwatering acidity, and long lees ageing in old fuder usually adds a little texture. Think old-school, refreshing Kabinett with a clean, lifted finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
