From the man many consider Italy's greatest white winemaker, working out of a humble cellar in Friuli. Enzo Pontoni farms 15 hectares of steep, hilly vineyards in the Colli Orientali, on the region's classic ponca soils, a 60-to-80-million-year-old layering of marl and sandstone. He famously rarely leaves Friuli, tends every vine obsessively by hand, and makes microscopic quantities, well under 2,000 cases total across all his bottlings. The Bianco is his barrel-fermented field blend, typically built around Friulano with Sauvignon and Chardonnay, raised in French oak (a good chunk of it new) for depth and texture. This is white wine as serious as great Burgundy, profound, age-worthy, and rare enough that bottles disappear fast.

More about Miani

Enzo Pontoni founded Miani in 1985 and capped production at fewer than 700 cases per year. His Sauvignon Blancs command a cult following—rare, expensive, impossible to find. The soil is ponca: layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. The approach is obsessive. This is what happens when a grower refuses to compromise or scale up.
