Friulano is the workhorse grape of northeast Italy, but in Enzo Pontoni's hands it becomes something else entirely. Miani is an allocation-only estate famous for old vines, brutally low yields, and fewer than 700 cases of everything combined, farmed on the ancient ponca marl of Colli Orientali del Friuli. Pontoni's Friulano trades the grape's everyday image for real depth and cut, a white built with enough extract and structure to reward a few years in the cellar. It is a rare chance to taste what a native Friulian variety can do when a grower refuses to cut a single corner.

More about Miani

Enzo Pontoni founded Miani in 1985 and capped production at fewer than 700 cases per year. His Sauvignon Blancs command a cult following—rare, expensive, impossible to find. The soil is ponca: layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. The approach is obsessive. This is what happens when a grower refuses to compromise or scale up.

Tasting Profile

Dry white with orchard fruit, almond, and a savory herbal edge. More structured and mineral than most Friulano, and worth cellaring.

Enzo Pontoni of Miani is a fanatic winegrower — he savagely prunes his vines, so drastically that his yields are the same as at Château d'Yquem. Each vine produces enough grapes to make one glass of wine. All of his wines, red or white are intensely concentrated. His methods in the vineyard and in the cellar are uncompromising. These are unique wines of intense character.
