Sauvignon Blanc taken about as seriously as it gets, from Italy's most revered white winemaker. Enzo Pontoni works tiny parcels in Friuli's Colli Orientali on ancient ponca (marl and sandstone) soils, farming organically and by hand, and producing minuscule amounts of wine. Casa Rossa is his single-cru Sauvignon, fermented and aged roughly ten months in used French oak before time in steel, a treatment that tames Sauvignon's brashness and builds a soft, savory, almost waxy texture. This is the opposite of zippy New Zealand Sauvignon, deeper, rounder, and built to age. Rare and worth seeking out for anyone who thinks they know what Sauvignon can do.

Enzo Pontoni founded Miani in 1985 and capped production at fewer than 700 cases per year. His Sauvignon Blancs command a cult following—rare, expensive, impossible to find. The soil is ponca: layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. The approach is obsessive. This is what happens when a grower refuses to compromise or scale up.
