This 2020 Blanc de Blancs lets you taste three very different kinds of Champagne Chardonnay in one glass. Les 3 Terroirs draws on all three of the house's Chardonnay villages. Grand Cru Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the estate's spiritual home, brings tension and salinity from its deep, pure chalk. Montgueux, a south- and southeast-facing hill of marl-chalk and flint just outside Troyes in the Aube, gives rounder fruit with a mineral streak. Vindey, on the Sézannais slopes, adds floral, finely textured Chardonnay from clay-limestone soils with some sand. The family liked the fruit from those two lesser-known villages so much that they stopped selling the grapes and started bottling them themselves, and this cuvée puts them side by side with Mesnil. The house gives it at least five years on the lees and finishes it Extra Brut, so nothing gets in the way of the fruit and the chalk. Marco Pelletier, who now partners with the house, calls Michel Gonet "the sleeping beauty of Champagne." A vintage Blanc de Blancs with Grand Cru chalk at its core makes a good case that it's waking up.

More about Michel Gonet

Almost every Champagne story we write these days starts with a familiar story: a new member of a family that has been selling off grapes to the big Houses for generations has decided to start bottling their own wines. Chartogne-Taillet is just one of many examples.

For once, we have a story that is completely different. We have two super star sommeliers, one from the United States and one from Canada, joining forces to produce one extraordinary Champagne.

One star is Rajat Parr, who most of you are familiar with as a wine producer and writer who earned his “star” badge at RN74 and other addresses. The other is Marco Pelletier, a Canadian who had the privilege of serving as head sommelier at Taillevent in Paris.

Together, these guys have tasted a lot of Champagne. They have amazing connections in the wine world, and they both have tons of experience making fabulous wines. If there’s any pair in the world who can parachute into the heart of Champagne and make an incredible wine, it is them.

There is also a real Champagne Grower involved. Michel Gonet is an old name that has developed a reputation for exquisite Blanc de Blancs Champagne produced from vines in and around Avizé. Pelletier has been working with them since about 2011, and it is just in the last few years tha the collaboration has been extended to include Parr.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

An aperitif with gougères or raw oysters. It also works with lightly spiced food: Thai crab salad with lime and chili, sushi and sashimi, or a mild shrimp curry with coconut.

Tasting Profile

Expect a taut, chalk-driven Blanc de Blancs: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with the brioche and toasted-nut notes that long lees ageing typically brings. The Extra Brut dosage keeps it bone-dry, with fine bubbles, bright acidity and a saline, mineral streak carrying a long, clean finish. Think Chablis-like freshness, with bubbles and extra depth.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
