Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is the Cote des Blancs Grand Cru village widely considered home to the world's best Chardonnay vineyards — Krug Clos du Mesnil, Salon and Pierre Peters all live here. Michel Turgy is Le Mesnil's quietly outstanding grower, a recoltant-manipulant whose family has farmed Chardonnay in the village since 1881. Six hectares, exclusively Chardonnay, exclusively from Mesnil itself. The Reserve Selection is the house's calling card: roughly 30% reserve wines from older vintages, fermentation and aging in stainless steel to keep all that chalky Mesnil minerality intact, then three years on the lees before release. Pure, taut, chalky Blanc de Blancs at a quality level that should cost considerably more — a Mesnil insider pick that punches well above its weight.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Light yellow. Intensely perfumed aromas of poached pear, tangerine, candied fig and white flowers, with an piquant spicy element adding vivacity. Smooth, sweet and expansive on the palate, offering powerful orchard and pit fruit flavors and a touch of smokiness. The broad finish features excellent clarity and building spiciness." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

90 points

"The latest release of the NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Réserve Sélection exhibits aromas of crisp green apple, dried white flowers, hazelnuts and pastry cream. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and racy, with chewy extract, tangy acids and a delicate, pinpoint mousse, concluding with a chalky finish. It's a precise, flavorful blanc de blancs that's already showing well." —William Kelley

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters, raw bar, salt-baked fish, sushi, fried chicken, classic apero spread. The chalky cut also makes a brilliant partner for triple-cream cheeses and brown-butter scallops.

Tasting Profile

Pure Le Mesnil Chardonnay. Lemon zest, green apple, white flowers and salted almond over a deep chalk-and-oyster-shell core. Fine bead, taut, mineral-driven, and lingering on a long, saline finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
