A grand cru from 1990, one of Burgundy's legendary vintages, now past its 35th birthday and drinking in the sweet spot. Mommessin is an old Burgundian house with real pedigree, the longtime sole owner of the fabled Clos de Tart monopole. Charmes-Chambertin is the perfumed, silky side of Gevrey, all red fruit and florals where its neighbor Chambertin flexes muscle. Time has folded in the tertiary layers: forest floor, dried rose, sweet earth. If you've never tasted mature grand cru Burgundy, this is a graceful, ready-to-drink invitation.

"Overflowing with raspberry, strawberry and other fruit flavors and has all the tannins you expect with such great concentration. Built to age; try in 1999."
