One of the Right Bank's best-kept secrets, Canon-Fronsac produces structured, age-worthy Merlot-based wines at a fraction of neighboring appellations' prices. Moulin Pey-Labrie has farmed biodynamically since 2006, bringing concentration and purity to this limestone-clay terroir. The 2016 vintage—a legendary year in Bordeaux—is now at its drinking window: silky tannins, plum and cassis fruit, with notes of graphite and spice. This delivers serious Right Bank character without the serious price tag. Decant 30 minutes and serve slightly cool.

Antonio Galloni

83 points

"The 2016 Moulin Pey-Labrie is over-ripe, fruity and raisiny. I would prefer to drink it over the next few years, although, to be honest, there is not a lot of real complexity or balance here." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

87 points

"The 2016 Moulin-Pey-Labrie, the Canon-Fronsac property of Bénédicte and Grégoire Hubau, has a reserved bouquet with seaweed notes permeating the black fruit, though it remains a little sultry in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with black dusky fruit, very firm in the mouth, although the finish felt austere and a little short." —Neal Martin
