Crafted from the high-altitude vineyards of Mount Eden in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers a distinctive expression of this iconic California terroir. Known for its cool climate and rocky, well-drained soils, Mount Eden produces wines with both power and finesse, showcasing the potential of the region’s exceptional growing conditions.

The 2018 vintage opens with aromas of dark berries—blackberry, cassis—and subtle hints of tobacco and dried herbs. On the palate, it’s full-bodied with firm, well-integrated tannins that provide structure and depth, while the wine’s vibrant acidity ensures balance and freshness. The finish is long, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, and a touch of earthiness, reflecting the unique terroir of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with grilled steaks, roasted lamb, or rich, aged cheeses. While it’s ready to enjoy now, its structure suggests it will evolve beautifully over the next decade or more, making it an excellent choice for collectors and those who appreciate a complex, age-worthy wine. Mount Eden Vineyards’ 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a stunning example of the power and elegance that the Santa Cruz Mountains are capable of producing.

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a prime example of the transparency provided by this vintage throughout California. The nose is a beautifully balanced mixture of mulberry, redcurrant, pumice and charred herbs. The palate displays classic Mount Eden elegance and bristles with soft but persistent acidity. The finish is bracing, tannic and chewy, with a tight core of dark fruits gaining intensity in the glass. A lovely, age-worthy expression of the Santa Cruz Mountains." —Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Burly and tightly wound, with a racy, taut structure, this has a rock-solid core of damson plum, mulberry and loganberry fruit along with mouthwatering savory, cassis bush and sage accents. The long finish ripples with a note of warm gravel, giving this a decidedly old-school feel. Will be a lot of fun to watch this age in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2038."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"Mushroomy aromas of stewed shiitake and dark mahogany meet with crisp fruit on the nose of this complex bottling. Very dry tannins frame the sip in a serious veil, as flavors of sandalwood, graphite and dried dark fruit converge. This wine will last a long time."

More about Mount Eden Vineyards

Mount Eden sits 2,000 feet above Silicon Valley on austere Franciscan shale—no irrigation, pure minerality, pure exposure. They've been making estate Pinot and Chardonnay longer than anyone else in California. Jeffrey Patterson, winemaker since 1981, understands that the mountain's job is to make the grapes struggle. The wine shows that struggle beautifully.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

The heritage of Mount Eden Cabernet Sauvignon dates back to the 1890s, when the famed viticulturist Emmett Rixford of Woodside, California, obtained selected cuttings from Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux, France. Rixford planted his famous La Questa Vineyard with these selections, in the same proportions as found at Margaux.
