Elgin is South Africa's coolest wine region, and this Pinot Noir is built to show that off: it was picked in a tight ripeness window and handled with a deliberately light touch. For the 2023, the fruit was destemmed and gravity-fed into tulip-shaped Italian concrete vessels, so the berries fermented whole instead of being crushed. It then got just 10 days on skins with brief twice-daily pump-overs, because the aim was elegance rather than extraction. It finished in 300-litre Burgundian barrels (only 20% new), resting on its lees for 10 months. The estate sits on a ridge of Bokkeveld shale ringed by the Hottentots-Holland, Groenland and Kogelberg mountains. It was mostly an apple farm called Habibi when David Curl, formerly the owner of Bordeaux's Château Gaby, bought it in 2010 and named it after his mother-in-law, Moya Meaker, who was Miss South Africa in 1959. The winemaker is Jean Smit. If you like Pinot that leans toward restraint rather than heft, this is a smart bottle to try, and it will show best within five years of the vintage, or keep improving for up to a decade with careful cellaring.

"The 2023 Pinot Noir Elgin comes from vines on Bokkeveld shale, fermented with whole berries but not whole clusters to avoid pepperiness. It matured in 20% new Burgundian barrels for 11 months. This is perhaps a step up from the 2022 last year. There’s more complexity and sous-bois characteristics on the nose, with vivacious red berry fruit, briar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit and good structure. Gently grippy, this might just miss a bit of finesse and persistence, but it has the substance to merit aging in bottle." —Neal Martin

"The Moya Meaker 2023 Elgin Pinot Noir is a delightful wine that opens to a medium-dark appearance and subtle aromas at first. The bouquet shows floral background notes and fruit tones of tightly concentrated blackcurrant. With time, the floral notes blossom to show increasingly expressive violet and lilac. The most interesting part, however, are the metallic notes of iron ore or rusty nail from Bokkeveld shale soils. This wine ferments in concrete tanks and matures in 300-liter barrels. Production is 11,369 bottles." —Monica Larner

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

100% Pinot Noir

A 3.12HA densely planted vineyard, located on a ridge of ancient clay-rich Bokkeveld shale, made up of 5 blocks

Dijon clones 667 and 777

The five blocks were hand harvested in different tranches for optimum ripeness

All grapes were destemmed and gravity fed to tulip-shaped Italian concrete vessels to ensure whole berry fermentation

To capture the elegance of the fruit, and avoid excessive extraction, the wine spent just 10 days on skins, with relatively short pump-overs twice per day

Spontaneous fermentation with minimal extraction

Malolactic conversion occurred spontaneously in a combination of 2000-litre conical-shaped Austrian oak foudre and 300-litre Burgundian oak barrels, 25% new, with lees contact for eleven months of maturation

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared duck breast with a cherry or plum sauce; wild mushroom risotto; roast chicken with thyme and garlic; cedar-plank salmon; pork tenderloin with a red wine reduction.

Tasting Profile

Expect a cool-climate Pinot Noir in a restrained, elegant style: red cherry, raspberry and cranberry fruit with hints of forest floor and a gentle spice from mostly older oak. Typically light to medium-bodied, with fresh acidity, fine, silky tannins and a clean, savoury finish. Think closer to red Burgundy than to riper New World Pinot.
