The red counterpoint to Mullineux's estate white — a Syrah-driven blend from Roundstone Farm, the family vineyard on the Kasteelberg's southwestern slopes (acquired 2014). The schist soils give Swartland Syrah its calling-card profile: peppery, savory, lifted, more Northern Rhône than New World. Andrea and Chris Mullineux farm organically and bottle restrained, perfumed reds that have helped redraw expectations of what South African Syrah can be. The 2023 Roundstone is fragrant and brambly, with crushed blue fruit, cracked black pepper, dried purple flowers and a saline, mineral close. Beautifully drinkable now with a little air; built to reward a few years of patience.

South Africa's Chenin evangelists. Chris and Andrea Mullineux make minimal-intervention wines from old bush vines in the Swartland, focusing obsessively on single terroirs: granite, schist, limestone each getting their own bottling. No added sulfites (except a whisper at bottling), no fining, no filtering. The result is Chenin with spine and soul—proof that the Cape's best expression still has room to grow.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops, slow-cooked beef short ribs, sausage and lentils, peppered duck breast, eggplant Parmesan, or hard sheep's-milk cheeses. Also lovely with venison or a charred ribeye.

Tasting Profile

Blueberry and dark plum, cracked black pepper, smoked herbs and dried violet. Schist-driven minerality and a saline lift keep things bright; tannins are fine-grained, acidity lively, finish long and savory.
