If you've wanted to try Nikolaihof without waiting a decade for a bottle to come round, this is your way in: a dry Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel from one of the longest-running biodynamic wineries in the world. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 1971 and has been Demeter certified since 1998. The Saahs family have owned the estate since 1894. The vines on the 22-hectare estate in Mautern average around 50 years old. They're farmed without herbicides, pesticides, artificial fertilizers or synthetic sprays. Nikolaihof is still a working, biodiverse farm, with herbs, fruit, flowers and beehives, and it even presses grapeseed oil from its own grape seeds. Niki Saahs took over from his parents, Christine and Nicholas, in 2005, and his partner Katharina Salzgeber is now the cellarmaster. Wine has been made on this site since the time of the Celts, so there's a lot of history behind a bottle you can open on a weeknight.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Aus den Gärten Federspiel comes from around 20-30 parcels across Mautern and was whole-bunch pressed and vinified in all manner of vessels, from steel to stoneware. A lovely notion of lemon blends with fresh moss on the nose. The palate is bright, smooth and mellow. Citrus zest tingles gently and reveals itself gradually yet lastingly. Beautiful and pure." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Nikolaihof

Austria's oldest vineyard with almost two millennia of history. The Im Weingebirge site dates to the 5th century, when Roman soldiers occupied the Wachau. Nikolaihof has been Demeter-certified biodynamic since the 1970s—one of the first in Europe to embrace the practice. The wines are minerally, precise, and feel like touching something very old and very alive.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Wachau Federspiel profile: green apple, lemon and white pepper with a fresh-herb edge, light to medium-bodied and dry, with brisk acidity. Think of it as a peppery cousin to Sauvignon Blanc, rounder and less pungent, with a stony, savoury freshness and a clean, crisp finish.
