This Grüner Veltliner comes from Im Weingebirge, the oldest named vineyard site in Europe. The first written evidence of winemaking at Nikolaihof dates from 470 A.D. and records Germanic monks owning this very vineyard as Rome collapsed. Nikolaihof still farms it today, biodynamically since 1971, with loess on the upper terraces and deep topsoil over primary rock lower down the slope. Federspiel is the estate's lighter category, and 2015 was a warmer year in the Wachau that gave richer fruit and softer acidity. Don't let the quiet first sip fool you. The wine can seem almost sedate at the start, then a mineral length builds through the middle of the palate and stays. It's a delicate, refined wine, about as pure an expression of the house as you'll find.

"At barely over 12 percent alcohol, no wonder this is nearly as buoyant as its Hefeabzug counterpart, or as the 2014 Im Weingebirge (which was marginally higher in alcohol). Along with its lift, this displays clarity and infectious juiciness, offering both riper pear and apple fruit than the corresponding Hefeabzug plus similarly invigoratingly incisive cress, crunchy cucumber, mouthwatering salinity and crystalline stoniness. Varietally typical hints of wax bean and lentil on the nose persist through this bottling’s long and refreshing finish." —David Schildknecht

"The 2015 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel (Late Release) was bottled from an old 69-hectoliter oak vat in February this year, so after five years of barrel aging. The wine is bright and clear in color and opens with an intense, crystalline and finely yeasty bouquet of perfectly ripe fruits and crunchy stone aromas. Round and juicy on the palate, with rather mild acidity but a firm mineral and phenolic structure, this is still a rich and powerful wine with fine tannins and mouth-filling volume. It is still too young to unfold all its talents but will refine with further bottle age. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Nikolaihof

Austria's oldest vineyard with almost two millennia of history. The Im Weingebirge site dates to the 5th century, when Roman soldiers occupied the Wachau. Nikolaihof has been Demeter-certified biodynamic since the 1970s—one of the first in Europe to embrace the practice. The wines are minerally, precise, and feel like touching something very old and very alive.

Flatiron's Take

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-fried trout with sorrel butter; warm French lentil salad with goat cheese; poached salmon with a sorrel cream sauce; white asparagus with boiled potatoes and brown butter.

Tasting Profile

Delicate and refined, with early notes of sorrel and lentil. It's lighter-bodied (it's a Federspiel) and seems almost subdued at first, but a mineral note builds through the middle of the palate and carries into a long, lasting finish.
