Castiglione Falletto muscle from one of Barolo's oldest families. Oddero, founded in 1878 and run today by Mariacristina Oddero, has farmed across the appellation for generations, and their Villero parcel is the heart of the lineup. Acquired in 1989, this 0.8-hectare plot at 240 meters sits on the compact, clay-rich soils that make Villero Barolos some of Castiglione's most spiced, balsamic and structured. The great 2004 vintage was classical and powerful, ideal for this cru's profile. Twenty-one years on, the wine is comfortably in its drinking window: tannins resolved into velvet, fruit deepened into dark cherry and balsam, that Villero spice fully unfurled. Drink now through the next several years.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"The 2004 Barolo Villero is the freshest and most vibrant of these wines. Menthol, violets, black cherries, licorice and sweet spices emerge from this firm, medium-bodied Barolo. The tannins remain quite burly and in need of time to melt away, but this too is a commendable effort." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Enthusiast

89 points

"Villero is a bright and traditional wine with a lean, compact appearance and sharp aromas of small berries, almond and anise seed. It's a well-defined wine with firm, tight tannins and a cooling menthol-like finish. Drink after 2012."

More about Oddero

Super fresh, glowing Barolo from a 200-year legacy. Poderi Oddero dates to the 1700s and released its first bottled Barolo in 1878. Now run by sixth and seventh generations (Mariavittoria and Mariacristina and their children), they're certified organic and own some of Barolo's best crus: Bussia, Brunate, Vignarionda. The wines pop with bright red fruit and mineral finesse—drinkability with authority.
