First things first: it's not Lambrusco. 'Lambruschi' is simply the family name behind this Ligurian estate, and Costa Marina is the benchmark against which serious Vermentino gets measured. Ottaviano worked the Carrara marble quarries before clearing local woodland by hand in the 1970s to plant vines in Colli di Luni, on the dramatic border between Liguria and Tuscany, where salty ocean breezes collide with cool air coming off the Apuan Alps. His son Fabio runs the estate now, and the wine has stayed exactly what it always was: crystalline, deeply savory, and riding a big wave of crushed sea salt. If your white wine tastes run to Premier Cru Chablis and you are quick to dismiss Italian whites, this is the bottle that changes your mind. Serve it cold, ideally somewhere with a view of water.

More about Ottaviano Lambruschi

In the early 1970s, Ottaviano left the marble quarries of Carrara and bet on vineyards instead. His first Vermentino, bottled in 1982 from Costa Marina in Liguria's Colli di Luni, became legendary before the region even had official DOC status. His son Fabio took over in 1985, and now Ylenia (third generation) helps run the 12-hectare property. Their bone-dry, lithe Vermentinos sell out every year without fail. When a vineyard becomes a pillar of place, that's heritage.
