This Rosso is the everyday way into one of Montalcino's most old-school families. As one wine writer put it, "there are traditionalists and there is Padelletti." The Sangiovese comes from the same single block that feeds their Brunello, the Rigaccini vineyard. Roughly two of its six hectares, the lower-lying vines, go into the Rosso. The block sits on limestone and calcium-rich clay on Montalcino's cooler, Siena-facing north side, climbing to nearly 430 meters, where days and nights swing sharply between warm and cool. The cellar work doesn't cut corners just because this is the "little" wine: native yeasts in glass-lined cement, then time in big oak casks. The family has worked land here since 1571. Claudia Susanna Padelletti, the 27th generation, now runs the estate with her son Silvano Tarducci, farming organically and bringing in biodynamics, and the wine is still made in the cellars under their 16th-century house in the middle of town. If you love traditional Sangiovese, you get a lot of Brunello DNA here without the Brunello wait.

"The Padelletti 2022 Rosso di Montalcino shows dried berry notes that remind me of those raspberry or strawberry "fruit leather" treats we had as kids. To that simple tone, I would add sweet almond and honey granola. This wine is a bit overripe all said and done. 8,000 bottles were released." —Monica Larner

More about Padelletti

The village of Montalcino is one of the most spectacular sites in a region famous for its postcard ready beauty. Perched atop a hill in Southern Tuscany, it perfectly encapsulates the iconoclastic look that visitors have enjoyed for centuries. And as a bonus it is surrounded by vineyards that produce some of the world’s most noble and elegant wines from Sangiovese. There are many dozens of wineries and castellos that dot the hills in all directions, but today there is only one that still makes their wine entirely in the heart of the village: Padelletti. The family has been making wine in their ancient cellar beneath the villa for at least 450 years, located on Via Padelletti, an honor given to the family for helping to construct the wall that surrounds Montalcino. The family’s vineyards are located Northeast of the village on the slope of the hill facing east. This spot is a bit cooler and allows for excellent balance of power and finesse. The farming has been organic for many years and the Brunello vines are 30-50 years old. In the cellar little has changed in many generations. The fermentation occurs with natural yeast in glass lined cement tanks and maceration lasts about 3 weeks. Then everything ages in large, Slavonian oak (ok, they do have one, 30 hectoliter, old French barrel just because) for 2 years, and an additional year plus in bottle before release.
