Monumental Sagrantino from Montefalco's highest-altitude vineyard—45 days on skins, nearly 4 years in large Slavonian oak, only 3,933 bottles made. The Bea family has been documented in Montefalco since 1500; Paolo began commercial bottling in 1980 and his sons now continue. A founding member of Vini Veri, the estate refuses even copper sulfate in the vineyards. Unfiltered, unfined, minimal sulfur—pure, powerful, built for decades.

"The 2019 Montefalco Sagrantino Cerrete is a dark beast of a Sagrantino, bursting from the glass with an aromatic display that reminds me more of food than wine. The bouquet mixes cherry sauce, ginger and clove with hints of seared meat and flowery underbrush. It opens with a pleasant inner sweetness and velvety textures, as balsamic spice complicates a dense wave of ripe red and black fruits. Through it all, zesty acidity maintains a fantastic balance as the 2019 leaves black tea-like tannins and a lingering licorice resonance." —Eric Guido

More about Paolo Bea

Montefalco's old-school radical. Paolo comes from a lineage reaching back 500 years; today he practices unrelenting non-interventionism—no additions except sulfur, no fining, no filtering, stainless steel and large Slovenian oak. His Sagrantino di Montalcino (both dry and passito versions) tastes like iron, cinnamon, and the earth of Umbria. A winemaker who won't compromise.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

The cooler and drier position of the Cerrete vineyard, located at the highest altitude in Montefalco, take Sagrantino to new heights. Fermentation begins naturally after a 45-day maceration, then the wine spends a year in steel tanks, before resting for 43 months in large oak barrels. The resulting wine is intense in nearly every aspect, with a deep violet color, robust tannins, and power that announces itself from the first aromas through the persistent finish. Despite all of this intensity, the wine is not heavy, as the terroir provides lift and elegance that enchants the senses.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roasted lamb, grilled steak, wild mushroom dishes, herb-crusted pork, aged aged Sagrantino-style cheeses

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby with aromas of dark fruit, licorice, tar, and earthy minerality. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins, delivering concentrated flavors of blackberry, plum, and complex earth notes with a long finish.
