A fully mature Paolo Scavino Barolo from one of Piedmont's great classical vintages. Enrico Scavino — fourth-generation, working alongside daughters Enrica and Elisa — is one of Castiglione Falletto's modernist anchors, known for site-precise, polished, terroir-driven Barolo. The 1999 vintage is now widely regarded as benchmark classical Piedmont: balanced, structured, elegant, built for the long haul. Twenty-seven years on, this estate Barolo is in a beautiful place — primary fruit fully resolved into the dried-floral, tobacco-and-truffle tertiary register that defines mature Nebbiolo, with tannins integrated but still framing the wine. Polished Scavino craftsmanship, classical 1999 architecture, properly cellared and at peak. A bottle to share with people who notice.

Antonio Galloni

"Medium ruby. This Barolo normale offers heady notes of super-ripe red fruit, licorice, roasted coffee beans and toasted oak on a medium-bodied with good length and balance, although it can't match the sheer appeal of the 2000 or 2001. Already fairly approachable with some air, it should drink well to age 15." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 1999 Barolo is far more than a regular bottling. A full garnet with raisins, plums, and chocolate on the nose, its depth, freshness, and velvet add up to much immediate drinking pleasure." —Daniel Thomases

Wine Enthusiast

"Intense from start to finish, Scavino's blended Barolo packs plenty of power into a lush, thoroughly modern frame. Toasty oak embraces the fruit without obscuring it, allowing flavors of cherry liqueur to burst across the palate. Tempting now, better in 5–7 years."

More about Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.
