Enrico Scavino's signature cru, 24 years on. Bric del Fiasc (the dialect name for Bricco Fiasco) is the southwest-facing parcel in Castiglione Falletto (Scavino owns roughly 2.5 hectares in the heart of the Fiasco cru) that Enrico persuaded his father Paolo to bottle separately starting in 1978 — and it has been the calling card of Paolo Scavino ever since. The 2001 vintage is one of the great classical years of the modern era, and at this age the wine has shed its considerable youthful structure and slid fully into its mid-life window: smoke, tar, dried roses, licorice, sweet menthol and that core of Castiglione Falletto fruit that always feels both powerful and lifted. A flagship of contemporary Barolo in full stride.

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.

Built for the Piedmontese classics: brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin in butter and sage, roast guinea hen with truffle, or a long-aged Castelmagno. The maturity flatters anything braised, roasted, or rich.

Tasting Profile

Mature and lifted. Tar, dried rose, sweet menthol, licorice, smoke, and dried red cherry. Castiglione Falletto power has resolved into silk; tannins fully integrated, finish long, perfumed, faintly balsamic.
