Monvigliero is effectively the grand cru of Verduno, a famously perfumed, elegant Barolo site, and Paolo Scavino, the producer who helped pioneer single-vineyard Barolo, has farmed it as its own cru since acquiring the parcel. Calcareous, pale soils and cool air drawn off the Tanaro river give this Nebbiolo soft tannins, vivid red fruit and an almost floral lift, and Monvigliero tends to drink earlier than other Barolos. The 2008 was a classic, structured vintage, and with well over a decade of age this is in a gorgeous mature window. Decant and enjoy a benchmark cru Barolo at its peak.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2008 Barolo Monvigliero flows from the glass with layers of silky, textured fruit. This is one of the more feminine wines in the Scavino lineup. Floral, minty notes develop in the glass, adding complexity, nuance and personality. The expression fruit is very Scavino, while the aromatics and structure are pure Monvigliero. This is another intriguing Barolo from Scavino." —Antonio Galloni

"Verduno gives tough-as-nails Barolo; Monvigliero is the one true grand cru. Stylish and pure, almost opulent. Great length."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Beautiful cherry and strawberry fruit is delineated on a well-integrated frame in this delicate red. Tea and iron notes add complexity, with the fine tannins woven into the finish."

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"An iconic wine, this shows bold spice and smoke flavors that are brushed over a core of dark, luscious fruit. It's already soft and plush with a touch of sweet, sun-ripened cherry on the finish."

More about Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.

Tasting Profile

Mature, perfumed Barolo: dried rose, red cherry and tar, savory and earthy with age, fine tannins now softened. Elegant and resolved.
