From Verduno's Monvigliero, widely considered that village's grand cru, comes one of the most elegant and floral Barolos you can find, made by Paolo Scavino, a key pioneer of the single-vineyard movement. The site's pale calcareous soils and cool breezes off the Tanaro give Nebbiolo soft tannins, perfume and bright red fruit, and Monvigliero is famous for being approachable earlier than most Barolo. The 2013 was a classic, fresh and structured vintage built for the long haul. It's beginning to open now but has plenty in reserve, so give it a generous decant or hold a few more years.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"One of the highlights in this range, the 2013 Barolo Monvigliero is creamy, sweet and also unusually supple for a young Barolo. Hints of rose petal, dried herb, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco gradually open up in a wine that is more giving on the palate than it is in its aromatics. The 2013 needs time for the classic Monvigliero perfume to emerge fully. There is more than enough precision, energy and tension to make me think that will come in time." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2013 Barolo Monvigliero really jumps out, thanks to its larger-than-life flavor profile and its impressive intensity. The wine shows ripe fruit aromas of dark cherry and plum, but it balances those aromas very nicely against spice, dark tobacco and crushed mineral. The effect is elegant and polished, and the tannins add ample support at the back. This wine promises a slow evolution over time. Paolo Scavino raises the banner high for the Monvigliero cru." —Monica Larner

"A suave red, this exhibits bright cherry, strawberry, iron, tar and tobacco flavors. Harmonious, with civilized, integrated tannins providing support. Shows terrific texture and spicy length."

Kerin O'Keefe

"Aromas of red berry, rose petal, blue flower, crushed herb and a whiff of espresso lift out of the glass along with a menthol note. The taut vibrant palate offers crushed strawberry, tart cherry, white pepper and star anise alongside tightly knit fine-grained tannins. It's extremely elegant but still youthfully austere at this stage so give it several more years to unwind." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.
