From one of La Morra's grandest crus, the Rocche dell'Annunziata, this is Paolo Scavino's flagship Riserva, made only in the finest years and given extended aging before release. The Scavino family bought into this prestigious site in 1990 and farms each sub-plot separately, vinifying with native yeasts. Aging runs through a mix of French oak and large casks, with new oak kept restrained to let the vineyard speak. The 2001 is a celebrated traditional Barolo vintage now showing the savory, tertiary complexity that only properly aged Nebbiolo delivers. This is mature Barolo at its peak, ready to drink now.

Antonio Galloni

97 points

"The 2001 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata is huge and seamless from start to finish. The wine totally envelops the palate with masses of dark red fruit, roses, spices, and mint, all supported by nearly imperceptible tannins. The volume and shape of the 2001 is simply breathtaking. This is Scavino's most vibrant 2001. It is also his most polished, refined Barolo." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

97 points

"Big and opulent on the nose, with blackberry, earth and spice and just a hint of cedary cigar box. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. It goes on and on. Muscular."

More about Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.
