Pure Nebbiolo character, no decade-long wait required — Paolo Scavino's Langhe Nebbiolo in the perfect half-bottle. Scavino is one of Barolo's benchmark modern-classical estates, founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto and today run by Enrico Scavino with daughters Enrica and Elisa. Their reputation rests on an extensive lineup of single-cru Barolos (Bric del Fiasc, Rocche dell'Annunziata, Cannubi, Monvigliero), but the Langhe Nebbiolo draws on declassified parcels of Nebbiolo, aged in neutral oak for around 10 months. Aromatic and lifted — rose petal and tar, kirsch and orange peel, white pepper, dried herbs — with the fine-grained tannins that mark serious Nebbiolo, all in a 375ml format ideal for one or two.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo is another fine entry-level offering from Scavino. Crushed flowers, sweet macerated red cherry, cedar and pipe tobacco give the 2023 striking aromatic presence to match its mid-weight personality. Floral overtones reappear to round out the finish. This is beautifully done." —Antonio Galloni

Decanter

"Fragrant and primary, the nose of this must-buy value pick offers raspberry, mint and rose. Silky in texture and light on its feet with a succulent blood orange, Campari-esque character, its very fine tannins dissolve swiftly. To achieve an immediately approachable version of Nebbiolo, the Scavino family draws on east-facing parcels on sandy soil in the village of La Morra. Maceration lasts just five days and ageing in neutral barrels has been reduced to eight months."

Wine Spectator

"Macerated cherry is the core flavor, with accents of earth and menthol. The firm structure keeps this reined in, yet there are echoes of the fruit and savory components on the finish. Drink now through 2030."

Kerin O'Keefe

"The 2023 Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo shows Nebbiolo’s youthfully charming side, offering sensations of ripe black cherry, blood orange, dried herb, black tea and star anise. It’s delicious and bright, with lithe tannins that make ideal to enjoy now. Drink through 2026." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino founded his winery in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo. Now Enrico runs it with his daughters—the fourth generation—working 23 hectares across 19 different Barolo crus, touching all but three communes. The house style is elegant, polished, serious. Bric Dël Fiasc (both standard and Riserva), Cannubi, Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata: these are Barolos that reward patience. A century of learning how to make red wine the right way.
