Papegaai is Dutch for parrot — specifically the Cape parrot, South Africa's endangered native, to whom this bottle is dedicated. It's the gloriously casual table wine from Adi Badenhorst, one of the Swartland's most celebrated naturally-minded producers, working out of his Kalmoesfontein farm on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg. The recipe: a fresh, light-bodied red built from low-yielding old bush vines on the farm plus some top-tier fruit borrowed from the neighbors, with a generous proportion of white grapes co-fermented in the blend (roughly 70% white to 30% red) to keep things lifted. The result is the platonic ideal of an easy red — juicy, low-alcohol-feeling, slightly chillable, full of red fruit and a citrus snap, and built for the kind of long Tuesday dinner where the bottle disappears before you notice.

"The 2025 Papegaai Red, which has minimal SO2 and includes 20 varietals, both white and red. It has a pretty bouquet with redcurrant and crushed strawberry that has a bit more oomph compared to the white. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, lively with a bright and perky finish." —Neal Martin

"Adi Badenhorst playfully calls this a “non-binary” wine, an ultra-inclusive blend of 22 varieties made from roughly half red and half white grapes. The A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines 2025 Swartland Papegaai Red Blend sees fruit picked proportionally across the farm, meaning larger vineyard parcels contribute more and smaller plots less, creating a true snapshot of the estate. Bright and contemporary in style, it shows lifted cherry, wild rose, white pepper and a kind of sangria-like energy without overt sweetness, driven by vivid red fruit and freshness. The wine is joyful and expressive with natural lift, best enjoyed chilled as if it were a rosé to highlight its charm and vibrancy." —Monica Larner

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for casual dinners: roast chicken, pizza, pasta with simple tomato sauce, charcuterie boards, or burgers off the grill. Lightly chilled, it shines with fish tacos, grilled sardines, or a summer cookout.

Tasting Profile

Juicy and lifted: bright red fruit (cherry, raspberry, pomegranate), a citrus snap from the white-grape splash, and a light-bodied easy frame. Low-yielding old bush vines deliver concentration without weight.
