This is a sweet, botrytised Gewurztraminer from a Grand Cru the Blanck family calls one of the last traces of Alsace's sub-Mediterranean past. It has nearly two decades in bottle, which is the kind of time a Vendange Tardive is built for. Furstentum sits at 400 metres facing due south, on slopes of 25 to 38 percent. The soil is very stony and free-draining, with limestone bedrock breaking through the surface, and the sun-exposed slopes support a Mediterranean-like flora. For Vendange Tardive ("late harvest"), the grapes hang for several weeks after picking begins while noble rot dries them on the vine, concentrating both sugar and acidity. The house then ferments on native yeasts, ages the wine for a year on its lees in large oak barrels, and holds it another four to five years in bottle before release. The producer gives it 20 years of keeping potential, so this is a chance to drink a mature Alsace sweet wine from the family that helped get the Schlossberg recognised as the region's first Grand Cru. Serve it at 11–12°C, which is the producer's own advice.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras torchon with fig jam; Munster cheese with cumin; Roquefort or Fourme d'Ambert; pear or quince tarte tatin; Moroccan chicken tagine with apricots and warm spices.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Alsace Vendange Tardive Gewurztraminer profile: lychee, perfumed floral notes and exotic spice, deepened by the honey and dried apricot of noble rot. The palate is typically sweet, rich and full-bodied, with the concentrated acidity of late harvest keeping it balanced. With bottle age these wines move toward marmalade and honeyed, savoury tones, finishing long and spicy.
