Here's a chance to see what Alsace Pinot Noir does with more than a decade in bottle: a 2012 red from a family that helped put Alsace's Grand Crus on the map. The Blancks' winegrowing history goes back to 1610, when their Austrian ancestor Hans Blanck acquired his first vines. From 1975, Paul's sons Bernard and Marcel played a key role in getting the Schlossberg recognised as the first Grand Cru in Alsace. The house makes its classic Pinot Noir to show the grape and the calcareous clay soils of Kientzheim. For anyone who only knows Alsace for its whites, it's a fun way to find out the region does red too. The producer's own advice is to serve it chilled and decanted.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Alsace Pinot Noir profile: red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant with a gently earthy, savoury edge. Typically light to medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and fine, soft tannins, finishing clean and dry. Think of a lighter, more delicate red Burgundy, which is why it takes so well to a light chill.
