The Lardots only make a red Kontakt in years that allow it, and 2025, a vintage that gave them wines both generous and fresh, produced a great one. Kontakt is the estate's entry-level range. It can also pick up declassified barrels from the single-vineyard wines, "booster shots" of top-level juice in what's meant to be the everyday bottle. That's about as good a value argument as a wine can make. Philip Lardot was born in Finland and raised in Amsterdam. He came to the Mosel by way of a natural wine importer in Copenhagen and a harvest in Burgundy, landed at Clemens Busch's vineyard and never left. He now farms the steep slopes naturally with his wife, Rosalie Curtin, in vineyards that, many or perhaps all of them, would go fallow without the couple. Their Pinot Noirs have been called brisk and alpine, and they rank among the most compelling reds in the Mosel. If you've wondered what Riesling country can do with a red grape, this is the easy way in.

More about Philip Lardot

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, grew up in Amsterdam, moved to Copenhagen to work for a natural wine importer, then went to Burgundy for a harvest before landing in Clemens Busch's vineyard in Moselle. He never left. With wife Rosalie Curtin, he farms five hectares on Moselle's steep slopes as a natural wine producer. The project is small, serious, and built on a path that wandered across Europe before finding its true home in German terroir.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Flammkuchen with onions and bacon; pan-roasted trout with brown butter; roast chicken with mushrooms; mushroom risotto; a board of cured ham and mild washed-rind cheese.

Tasting Profile

A dry, lighter-framed Pinot Noir in a brisk, fresh style, built on lift and acidity rather than weight. Expect bright fruit with a little extra generosity from the 2025 vintage, gentle structure and a clean, refreshing finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
