Philip Lardot, Riesling "alte Kirche" (Palmberg), 2023

Bone-dry Mosel Riesling from the Palmberg-Terrassen in Sankt Aldegund — a site of grey and blue slate that turns away from the east-facing Himmelreich into the village's shallow side valley to orient itself south, and an under-rated, Grand Cru quality site that majority owner Ulli Stein has cared for over decades. Philip and Rosalie Lardot got hold of a 0.3-hectare piece of it in 2021, planted mostly in the 1950s and '60s, and this is only the second wine to come off it. The name honors the Romanesque chapel built in 1144 at the foot of the hill. The Lardots don't use residual sugar to soften Mosel acidity at all; instead the fruit gets a few hours of maceration before pressing, ferments in barrel on full lees, and sits in tonneau for 22 months before going into bottle unfiltered at 12% alcohol. It's labelled simply Landwein der Mosel, which tells you nothing about how serious it is — these are outsiders (Finnish-born, Amsterdam-raised, with an American wife) rebuilding abandoned steep terraces across six villages, and they'd rather make the wine they want than chase a classification.

More about Philip Lardot

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, grew up in Amsterdam, moved to Copenhagen to work for a natural wine importer, then went to Burgundy for a harvest before landing in Clemens Busch's vineyard in Moselle. He never left. With wife Rosalie Curtin, he farms five hectares on Moselle's steep slopes as a natural wine producer. The project is small, serious, and built on a path that wandered across Europe before finding its true home in German terroir.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, pork schnitzel, smoked trout with horseradish cream, grilled mackerel, aged Comté, or a plate of oysters.

Tasting Profile

Fully dry, with aromas of gooseberry, golden apple and wet stone alongside a green, herbal tansy note. Medium-bodied and textured from the lees aging and long time in barrel, with bright, firm acidity and a salty, stony finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
