Philip Lardot, Riesling "am Bach" (Himmelreich), 2023

This Mosel Riesling comes entirely from ungrafted vines. Most were planted in the 1950s and '60s, and one parcel is close to a century old, which is the reason to pay attention. "am Bach" is made from seven small plots in the Sankt Aldegunder Himmelreich, each just 400 to 900 square metres, all on grey and blue slate facing due east. The war destroyed the planting records for the oldest plot, so Philip Lardot's estimate of about 100 years is as close as anyone can get. "Bach" is German for stream, and the name comes from the small creek that runs down the hillside along the edge of the Lardots' Himmelreich parcel. Lardot crushed the grapes, left them to soak overnight and fermented the juice in barrel on its full lees. The wine stayed there for 18 months before one racking and was bottled unfiltered as plain Landwein der Mosel, at 11.5% alcohol. That long time on the lees is the house signature. Lardot's Rieslings are airy but coating, layered rather than heavy, and nothing like the crisp, fruity Mosel most people picture. If you still think of German Riesling as sweet and simple, this bottle is a quiet correction, with a lot of old-vine history in it.

More about Philip Lardot

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, grew up in Amsterdam, moved to Copenhagen to work for a natural wine importer, then went to Burgundy for a harvest before landing in Clemens Busch's vineyard in Moselle. He never left. With wife Rosalie Curtin, he farms five hectares on Moselle's steep slopes as a natural wine producer. The project is small, serious, and built on a path that wandered across Europe before finding its true home in German terroir.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
