Pierre Moncuit, Champagne Delos Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, NV (1.5L)

Grand Cru Le Mesnil Chardonnay in magnum, from a grower who won't blend vintages even in their non-vintage wine. Pierre Moncuit calls the Delos the house flagship, and it's the clearest way into what this family does. It's 100% Chardonnay from their Grand Cru vines, with no reserve wines added, so each bottling is a snapshot of one harvest on Mesnil chalk. The vines are some of the oldest in the village (the family hasn't replanted a parcel in more than thirty years). Everything ferments in stainless steel with full malolactic, and there isn't a single barrel in the winery. The wines then age 24 to 36 months sur lattes before release. The name honors Pierre Moncuit, who started selling wine under his own name in 1928 while his wife, Odile Moncuit-Delos, helped him on the commercial side. Pierre's daughter Nicole has made the wines since 1977. This is real Grand Cru Mesnil without the trophy-name markup, in a bottle big enough for a long table.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"the same wine as the Extra Brut, but with dosage of 7 grams per liter. Pear, brioche, spice and orchard fruit overtones all race out of the glass. The higher dosage gives the Brut a bit more immediacy, but also results in the impression of some loss of persistence through the mid-palate and into the finish. Even so, the Delos offers plenty of appeal. Dosage: 7 gr/L." —Vinous

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters on the half shell, crudo and sushi, warm gougères, fried chicken, lobster rolls, and a wedge of aged Comté to finish.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with a chalky, saline minerality and a light note of brioche from extended time on the lees. Steel fermentation keeps it taut and racy, full malolactic softens the edges, and the fine mousse leads to a dry, long, mineral finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
