Maxime and Camille Ponson are the 6th generation to run this family estate based in the La Petite Montagne de Reims.

They are blessed with a broad collection of 1er cru level sites in some of the great villages of area including Vrigny (home to one of Egly-Ouriet’s most famous parcels), Eceuil (home village of Savart) and their hometown of Coulommes-la-Montgane. Since taking over after their father's tragic, early death in 2018, they've radically improved the farming, moving all of their estate-owned vineyards toward organic certification and employing lots of biodynamic techniques as well.

In the cellar, their pristine fruit is whole-cluster pressed using an old-school basket press and fermented in stainless steel to maintain maximum freshness. Élévage takes place mostly in tank, with oak used extremely sparingly. The brothers also age a significant amount of reserve wine, which they employ to give the wines a heady touch of oxidation and power.

This wine is 70% Pinot Meunier, 15% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay, and based on the lean and energetic 2021 vintage. With just a few minutes of air, the wine starts to show its crunchy mineral core and a delightfully grippy, extra-long finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
