Montestefano is the cru Produttori del Barbaresco nicknames "the Barolo of Barbaresco." This magnum is from 2007, a year the producer calls "almost a perfect vintage," and it now has nearly two decades behind it. The slope faces south to south-east, and its soil is among the highest in calcium of any Barbaresco vineyard. The co-op credits that calcium for the wine's powerful tannic structure, and the slope's extra heat for its full body and almost meaty texture. 2007 set a record for an early harvest, though not because of a hot summer, which was actually fairly cool. A mild, snowless winter simply woke the vines up two weeks early. Picking started on 16 September and went slowly for almost three weeks in spectacular weather, bringing in thick-skinned grapes from a crop about 20% smaller than usual. The producer describes the vintage as powerful, ripe and balanced, and built for a long life. Bottles like this are why Produttori is one of the great cellar values in wine: serious single-vineyard Nebbiolo that has had the time it needs, in the format collectors prize for slow, graceful aging. Open it well ahead and give it air.

Antonio Galloni

"Ripe aromas of plum, mint, chocolate and camphor. Big, rich, round and full, with ripe, sexy flavors of raspberry and plum emerging as the wine opens in the glass. Has the plush, velvety texture to support its fine-grained tannins. Long and complete. This large-scaled and powerful Barbaresco is easy to appreciate in its youth. From a similar exposition to the Montefico, notes Vacca, except that this is at a higher altitude and gets less wind off the river." —Stephen Tanzer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Hand-cut tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; braised lamb shoulder with rosemary; roast pheasant or guinea fowl; a wedge of young Toma Piemontese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bolder side of Barbaresco: Nebbiolo's classic tar and roses up front, then violets and red cherry, with dried herbs and leather coming in as these wines mature. Think Barolo-like weight, full-bodied and almost meaty, with powerful but ripe tannins and fresh acidity leading to a long, dry, savoury finish.
