Ovello is the muscle in Produttori del Barbaresco's lineup of single-cru wines, and 2007 is a year the Produttori themselves called "almost a perfect vintage." The vineyard is the northernmost in the village of Barbaresco, dropping steeply toward the Tanaro River, and the house credits its calcareous limestone-and-clay soils with giving the wine a strong backbone and powerful tannins. The 2007 harvest set a new record for earliness in Barbaresco. That wasn't down to a hot summer (it was pleasant and relatively cool) but to a mild winter with no snow, which got the season going a full two weeks ahead of schedule. Picking started on 16 September and moved slowly for almost three weeks in spectacular weather. It brought in thick-skinned grapes and about 20% less wine than usual, and the Produttori judged the result powerful, ripe and long-lived. Behind the bottle is the cooperative model at its best: 51 members farming nearly 100 hectares of Barbaresco Nebbiolo, and cru-level wine at a price no single estate with this pedigree would dream of asking. If you want to see what an aged Barbaresco from a serious site and a great year is all about, this is about as good a deal as you'll find.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Good full red. Currant, smoke, menthol and a touch of oak on the nose. Smooth and sweet but at the same time vinous and youthful, with the currant and smoke flavors carrying through onto the palate. This suave, deep wine finishes with substantial, building fine-grained tannins and a touch of medicinal austerity. According to Aldo Vacca, the 2007s show an extra element of smokiness across the board that combines well with their spiciness." —Stephen Tanzer

"Though hot like 2009, 2007 was more balanced. The summer was characterised by plenty of light, with very little fog in September - a rare year in which you could see the surrounding Alps clearly. The harvest was the longest on record, lasting almost four weeks with all the grapes possessing similar pH, colour and sugar. The wine is immensely likeable, demonstrating autumn leaf, truffle and slight vanilla nuances with silky tannins and relatively modest acidity. It's an easy-going Barbaresco, but just lacks some of the personality of 2009 and tension of 2008."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"An austere, sinewy style, exhibiting strawberry, tea, white pepper, eucalyptus and iron flavors. It's all underscored by dense, dusty tannins, with plenty of grip on the tightly wound finish."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo or braised beef cheeks over soft polenta; tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; roast leg of lamb with rosemary; wild mushroom risotto; finish with Castelmagno or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Barbaresco Nebbiolo: intense red cherry and raspberry with violet, dried herbs and a hint of tar, moving toward leather, truffle and dried fruit with age. Typically full-bodied for Barbaresco, with bright acidity and firm, powerful tannins from Ovello's limestone-and-clay soils (think a slightly more graceful Barolo), finishing long and savoury.
