A magnum of one of Produttori's most structured single-cru Riservas, seventeen years on and just stepping into its window. Montestefano is consistently the most powerful and tannic of Barbaresco's crus — known as the cru that most resembles a Barolo in Barbaresco clothing — and 2008 was a solid classical vintage that suited that profile perfectly. Produttori's Riservas only see release in the best years, after extended botti aging, and the magnum format will keep this one going for decades more. Among the most age-worthy Barbarescos made, period — and the cooperative model means this kind of pedigree is delivered at a fraction of what comparable single-estate bottlings ask. A serious bottle for a serious table.

Antonio Galloni

"Good medium red. Raspberry, redcurrant, herbs and spices on the nose, complicated by vanilla and hints of apple and citrus fruits. Utterly silky-smooth yet lively on entry, then juicy and pure in the middle, with lovely spicy lift to the red fruit flavors. Not at all outsized for this bottling but offers an explosion of flavor. The velvety, rising finish leaves the mouth feeling refreshed. This beauty is a bit less dominated by its tannins today than the Muncagota and should offer earlier enjoyment. But it also has the stuffing to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle." —Stephen Tanzer

"This red is all structure, needing air to reveal its ripe cherry, plum, leather and tobacco flavors. The tannins are dense, yet this is long and satisfying on the finish."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pull out the heavy hitters: brasato al Barbaresco, oxtail, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or a great aged Castelmagno. The magnum makes it a meal-anchor for eight to twelve at a long winter table.

Tasting Profile

Powerful and tannic, with the umami depth that defines great Montestefano: dark cherry, dried porcini, licorice root, leather, tar, crushed stone. Long, gripping finish. Still youthful for its age — give it air.
