Only 1,090 magnums of the 2017 Montestefano Riserva were made, and they come from the cru Produttori del Barbaresco calls probably the Barbaresco most reminiscent of Barolo. Montestefano is a 3.9-hectare slope of calcareous limestone facing south and south-east. The co-op credits the heat of that slope with giving the wine its full body and almost meaty texture, and it's usually the last vineyard in Barbaresco to be picked. Produttori describes 2017 as a medium-bodied year with intense mineral and spicy aromas and ripe, balanced tannins. So this is the house powerhouse in an elegant mood, with more poise than brawn. The fruit came from vines owned by six member families (Gonella, Maffei, Marcarino, Rivella, Rocca and Vacca). The wine then spent at least 30 months in large 25-50 hl oak barrels, the unhurried, old-school way. These single-vineyard Riservas remain among the best values for cellar-worthy wine in the world, and Produttori gives this one 20 years from the vintage. The magnum, the format collectors prize for slower, more graceful aging, gives you room to take your time and makes a centerpiece for the table.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is a potent, savory wine. Today, the fruit is very much in the background. A brooding, backward Barbaresco, the Montestefano clearly needs time, it is a somber, imposing Barbaresco. Dark plum, earthiness, cloves, menthol and licorice infuse the finish with notable gravitas. There's plenty of Montestefano breadth and resonance." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is darkly concentrated and among the richest wines in this series of single-vineyard Riservas. Montestefano is angular, textured and bold with dark fruit aromas, dried blackberry, toasted almond and cured tobacco. With this vintage, you get an age-worthy wine that offers brawn and power for drinking in the medium term, but it will become increasingly silky and slender with time. Dusty tannins and crushed stone appear on the long finish. There were 14,486 bottles produced." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

"Barbaresco. Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. A little dusty at first and a little brooding with deep ripe cherry fruit and hints of dried cherry and damson. Very slow to open up. Succulent and focused cherry fruit palate filled out with bags of fine, gravelly tannins. Majestic structure and plenty of juice on the finish, while it can be approached now."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Dense and rich, if on the austere side now, courtesy of burly tannins, with black cherry, plum, tar and mineral serving as the main flavor themes. Reveals terrific energy and length, with a chalky feel on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2045."

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"New leather, camphor, cedar and dark spice aromas form the subtle but compelling nose. On the firmly structured palate, tightly knit, noble tannins support fleshy Morello cherry, crushed raspberry star anise and baking spice. Drink through 2029." —Kerin O'Keefe
