Produttori del Barbaresco may be the best argument in wine that a cooperative can outrun most estates. In strong years — and 2016 in Piedmont was a very strong year — the growers bottle their finest crus separately as Riserva, and the wines age for decades while costing a fraction of what that implies. Muncagota tends to speak in perfume rather than muscle: rose petal, dried cherry, tar and sweet tobacco, all wrapped in Nebbiolo's fine, insistent tannin. At a decade old it is just starting to open, showing the savory, earthy complexity Nebbiolo gives up only with time, and it has plenty of road ahead. Decant it, give it a good hour, and pour it alongside something rich. Getting to know these adjacent crus, each shifting with soil and slope, is one of wine's great pleasures.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota continues this tasting of frankly awe-inspiring wines. Rich, deep and super-expressive, the 2016 hits all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice emerge, but only with great reluctance. The Muncagota is another wine in this range that clearly needs time." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota stands out in this group of nine for the slightly more mineral-driven definition on the bouquet and the bigger textural impact and structure of the mouthfeel. There is plenty of wild fruit and cherry, but the wine's aromas also veer toward crushed stone, iron ore, spice and candied orange peel. You feel the impact on the palate, thanks to integrated tannins, freshness and an elegant dose of fruit or phenolic weight. Fruit for this wine is sourced from vineyards owned by the Bellora, Lignana and Viglino families. Production for Muncagota in this vintage is 11,157 bottles." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

95 points

"Balsamic notes of juniper, eucalyptus and pine align with floral, cherry and black currant flavors in this supple, well-structured red. Balanced and long, with a lingering aftertaste of rose, cherry and mineral."

More about Produttori del Barbaresco

Founded in 1958 by 19 growers, who made the first vintages in the basement of Barbaresco's church, the Produttori del Barbaresco today counts some 50 member families farming over 100 hectares of Nebbiolo. In top vintages they bottle nine single-vineyard Riservas: Asili, Montefico, Montestefano, Muncagota, Ovello, Pajè, Pora, Rabajà and Rio Sordo. Real Barbaresco from the growers who keep the village's soul intact, at prices that still feel like a public service.
