Pajè is the Produttori del Barbaresco cru built to stay fresh. It sits close to famous Asili but on a different ridge and lower down, cooled by wind off the Tanaro river, and its limestone-and-clay soil carries more calcium. The Produttori call Pajè "brilliant and vertical", a site whose Nebbiolo holds on to its floral note and fresh fruit over time. It is 100% Nebbiolo. As is the house's habit, Pajè is aged in big oak casks rather than small barriques. Behind it is a cooperative of 51 members farming nearly 100 hectares of Barbaresco Nebbiolo, and that model is why these cru Riservas are still among the best values in cellar-worthy wine anywhere. Getting to know the neighbouring crus side by side is one of wine's great experiences, and Pajè, with Asili close by, is a lovely place to start.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is starting to shut down in bottle, but the signatures are still very much present, namely acidity and structure that give depth while also providing terrific balance to the generosity of the year. The Pajè was much more expressive when I tasted it a few months ago." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"The Produttori del Barbaresco 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè shows a heavier center of gravity (compared to the Pora) with thicker concentration of dark fruit at the middle. The jump is not big, but it is noticeable, like one step up a ladder. This wine produces more ferrous earth and iron ore with plenty of dark fruit. The mouthfeel is less complicated and shorter too in this vintage, although the tannins feel firm and prominent. Between Pora and Pajè, I'd give a slight edge to Pora. Some 10,000 bottles were released." —Monica Larner

Decanter

93 points

"This is a small vineyard close to the village of Barbaresco, and its limestone-dominant soils usually give wines that are bright and floral - this wine meets that expectation. The nose shows intensity and purity, with piercing red fruit aromas. It's supple on the attack, bright but weighty, and very concentrated. Lively acidity gives the finish tension and persistence. Elegant and long."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"A beam of fresh cherry and plum plays out over a line of earth, tar and licorice in this round and open red, with well-integrated tannins for support. Shows excellent balance and length and should be approachable soon."

Kerin O'Keefe

97 points

"Violet, new leather, perfumed berry and a whiff of face powder mingle together with balsamic whiffs of camphor on this fragrant red. On the structured, polished palate, taut, refined tannins support succulent Morello cherry, mulberry and licorice. It’s already tempting but hold for even more complexity. Drink 2022–2027." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barbaresco Riserva profile, leaning toward freshness: violet and dried-flower aromas over red cherry and raspberry, with hints of tar and dried herbs. Medium-bodied and lively, it has bright acidity and firm but balanced Nebbiolo tannins from ageing in large oak casks, and it finishes long and dry. Think a more perfumed, lighter-footed Barolo.
