A 46-year-old Barbaresco Riserva from Beppe Colla's prime years at Prunotto. Before the 1989/1994 Antinori sale, Beppe Colla guided Prunotto from the 1950s through the 1980s to become one of Piedmont's most respected addresses — a single-vineyard pioneer, deeply traditional in cellar, devoted (as he put it) to wines tasting first of fruit and soil and never of technology. 1980 was an excellent, harmoniously balanced Piedmont vintage, and a Riserva from that year, in a producer like this, in a category like Barbaresco, has the genetics for the long haul. Forty-six years on, this is fully mature: garnet, aromatic, savory, tannins long resolved. Pure Colla-era classicism — the kind of bottle you open with friends who understand what's in the glass.

Old Barbaresco wants gentle company: brodo with cappelletti, roast guinea hen, aged Robiola or Bra duro, or porcini on toast. Save the brasato for younger bottles.

Tasting Profile

Garnet, translucent, fading at the rim. Dried rose, sour cherry preserve, leather, tobacco, undergrowth, truffle, balsamic notes. Silky resolved tannins, long savory length. Mature, evocative, fully alive.
