A single-vineyard Barbaresco Riserva from one of Piedmont's true organic pioneers, for anyone curious about Nebbiolo farmed with as little intervention as possible. Campo Quadro is a small, south-facing vineyard at 450 metres in the San Cristoforo subzone of Neive. The slopes are too steep for machines, so everything is picked by hand, and only the best of its grapes go into this Riserva. Marina Marcarino took up organic farming as a university student in 1982, lost her entire first crop and kept going anyway. She follows Masanobu Fukuoka's "agriculture of not doing," keeps the vineyards green and uses copper and sulfur as little as she can. Her family had made wine at Punset (Piedmontese dialect for "beautiful hill") as a hobby for generations; she's the one who turned it into a real estate. Marina calls Campo Quadro very complex and long-lived, which makes this 2016 a serious Barbaresco for a slow-cooked dinner or for the cellar.

More about Punset

After many years of buying, cellaring, selling and -- most importantly -- drinking Barolo and Barbaresco, we are always surprised to find out that there are still new discoveries out there to be made.

One discovery is Punset, named for the hill in Neive that happens to be the highest in all of DOC Barbaresco. It reaches 800 meters of altitude, and combines steep slopes with varying mixes of sand and limestone.

The star of Punset is Marina Marcarino, who I had the pleasure of meeting just two weeks ago. As a very young woman, she converted her family winery entirely to organics. This was back in 1982, and she believes she was the first organically certified winery in all of Italy.

In the next few decades her farming continued to improve and become more natural, introducing biodynamics along the way. More recently, she adopted the full-on natural farming methods of Masanobu Fukuoka -- still incredibly rare across Italy.

In the winery, she hews to tradition, with long macerations and aging only in large casks. She makes only Riservas, preferring extra time in the bottle before releasing the wines. She did introduce one break with tradition: a couple of decades ago she decided that her two top terroirs were so different that it would be a shame to blend them together.

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in red wine), agnolotti del plin in roast-meat sauce, tajarin with butter and shaved truffle, rosemary roast leg of lamb, aged Castelmagno or Toma cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barbaresco Riserva profile: red cherry, violets and dried flowers, with spice, tar and a hint of cocoa as it opens. Typically medium-bodied but firmly built, with bright acidity and fine, grippy Nebbiolo tannins (think Barolo's more fragrant, slightly more elegant sibling), finishing long and savoury, in a style built to age.
