Rainwater was 19th-century Madeira’s most prestigious style, the connoisseur’s choice in Baltimore when Baltimore was America’s Madeira capital. Rare Wine Co. has revived it in collaboration with Ricardo Freitas of Vinhos Barbeito: Verdelho forms the backbone (the old standard), supplemented by lots of old Tinta Negra Mole, all aged by Canteiro method in lodge cellars at natural temperatures. The result is a wine of ethereal body, great finesse, and just a touch of sweetness—Madeira returned to its historical glory.
