A roughly even split of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon - a blend almost nobody in California attempts - grown on the decomposed granite the wine is named for. Renaissance farms 1,300 acres above Oregon House in Yuba County, terraced around a granite dome between about 1,700 and 2,300 feet, with cold Sierra nights that hold acidity through very hot days; the estate is why North Yuba became an AVA in the mid-1980s. The house method under Gideon Beinstock, who also founded Clos Saron, was dry farming, organic viticulture, native-yeast fermentation, used barrels, no fining or filtration, and long aging before release. Syrah brings the smoke, olive and pepper, Cabernet the frame, and the granite site gives both a stony lift. Two decades on it is mature and open. Stand the bottle upright for a day, decant gently off the sediment, and finish it the same night.

More about Renaissance

South Africa's wine industry exploded in the 1990s when apartheid ended and the world suddenly opened up. Renaissance represents that awakening—producers who had access to new techniques, new markets, new possibilities. A movement toward serious quality and international varieties happened quickly, with flying winemakers and a reimagined competitive landscape forcing everyone to get better. It's the story of a country finding its voice in wine.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, a peppery steak au poivre, or braised short ribs with olives. Also good with grilled eggplant and smoked paprika, which meets the Syrah half head-on.

Tasting Profile

Smoky blueberry and black cherry over black olive, cracked pepper, dried herbs and wood smoke. Medium- to full-bodied, fresh acidity, fine and largely resolved tannins, with a stony, savory finish. Dry.
