Champans is one of Volnay's most celebrated Premier Crus, a south-facing limestone-and-clay slope that gives Pinot Noir a graceful mix of perfume and backbone. The Bouley family, vignerons in Volnay for six generations, farm a small parcel here and make it in a classic, structured style. This is a 2014, a fresher and more elegant Burgundy vintage than the warm years around it, with bright acidity and finely-drawn fruit. With around a decade of age it's opening up nicely; drink now or hold a few more years.

"A pretty, cool and very restrained nose of ripe red currant, dark cherry and soft earth and spice notes are also trimmed in a deft touch of wood. The supple yet powerful medium weight flavors possess good size and weight while displaying a relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a concentrated, balanced and impressively persistent finish. This classy and beautifully balanced Champans will need 5 to 7 years to shed at least some of its tannic core and should reward 10 to 12."
