Rhys is best known for chasing Burgundian elegance through mountain farming, but the Horseshoe Syrah is the estate's Northern Rhone sleeper. From the high, protected, stony Horseshoe vineyard near the spine of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this is cool-climate Syrah grown at low yields, prized for savory aromatics, freshness and finesse over brute power. This 2018 is still young and built to age, so give it a long decant now or hold it for years. A serious, characterful California Syrah for fans of Cornas and Cote-Rotie.

More about Rhys Vineyards

Kevin Harvey, a software entrepreneur with a Burgundy obsession, started Rhys in 2004 to prove California could make world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from mountain vineyards. Seven estate vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Anderson Valley, all gravity-fed, foot-trodden, wild fermented by winemaker Jeff Brinkman. These are soil-driven wines—mineral, complex, serious. The kind of wines that make you forget you're drinking California.
