The wine that established this estate's reputation—in continuous production since 1981 yet relatively unknown outside serious wine circles. Serena Palazzolo brought organic viticulture to this Friuli hilltop property in the 1990s; today she manages it with her oenologist husband Christian. The blend (50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot) ages 20 months in oak, sourced from their oldest parcels on "Ponca"—a mineral-rich sandstone that defines Colli Orientali character. Cool Adriatic breezes lend a salty quality. This is the insider's Friuli red: European sophistication with distinctive minerality and aging potential at a fraction of comparable costs. "The 2022 Rosso del Gnemiz is darkly floral, with a spicy wave of cedar shavings, ginger spice, rose petals and dried black cherries. It balances textures of pure silk with cooling acidity and polished red berry fruits to create a truly seductive sensation on the palate. The finish is classically dry and structured, leaving a tart raspberry saturation that puckers the cheeks. Have patience with this child of a warm vintage because, while its fruit is pushed forward, the balance within is spellbinding. This is a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot." —Eric Guido

Ronco del Gnemiz sits atop Rosazzo hill in Friuli's Colli Orientali, where Serena Palazzolo and her sons (with winemaker Christian Patat) farm organically on Ponca sandstone soils. White wines with bright acidity, carefully oaked reds in the Bordeaux style, all marked by mineral intensity. The vineyard is 60 years old, yields are kept low, and the wines can age for three to five years. This is northern Italian precision.
