German Chardonnay is still a curveball for most drinkers, and that's exactly why this bottle is worth a look: Saalwächter's importer counts this cuvée among the best Chardonnays they've tasted from anywhere in Germany. It comes from Rheinhessen, the broad, rolling wine country on the Rhine's west bank, and it's 100% Chardonnay from organically farmed vines. The style is dry, medium-bodied and crisp. This isn't a buttery showpiece, it's a white you'll actually reach for at dinner. Carsten Saalwächter runs the estate today, carrying on a house Paul Christian Saalwächter founded back in 1853. If you're a Burgundy or Chablis drinker who likes a little discovery in your glass, this is an easy and rewarding detour.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Chardonnay is from the Tertiary limestones of Steinacker and Höllenweg, from young vines planted over the past six years in densities of 8,000-10,000 vines per hectare on drought-resistant Fercal rootstock. Supple, lemony ocean spray comes with the slightest notion of smoke. Lovely concentration and saltiness vibrate on the yeasty, taut palate. This is fresh and clean-cut, with that salty-lemony texture ringing long." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"From four to five plots planted with selections from Burgundy, the 2024 Chardonnay offers an intense and flinty/iodine as well as herbal (oregano) bouquet with ripe and finely concentrated lemon aromas intertwined with yeasty notes and those of pear skins. Pure, refined and very elegant on the palate, this is a quite dense and intense, perfectly balanced, textured and noble Chardonnay with a long, saline and finely tannic finish. This concentrated, very expressive Chardonnay is of remarkable class and purity. With bubbles and as a Côtes des Blancs, this would probably be an icon wine. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted as a sample that was ready for bottling. Tasted at the domain at the end of April 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Saalwachter

Carsten Saalwächter is being called one of Germany's most exciting young winemakers, and he runs a historic vineyard that Paul Christian Saalwächter founded in 1853. Located in Ingelheim in the Rheingau, it's on limestone-rich soils that give wines precision and complexity. Carsten makes elegant, gastronomic Burgundy-style wines from Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, plus slate-grown reds from Assmannshausen. Natural winemaking meets German precision.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-fried trout with brown butter and almonds; white asparagus with hollandaise and boiled potatoes; Flammkuchen with crème fraîche, onion and bacon; seared scallops; roast chicken with lemon and thyme.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry, medium-bodied Chardonnay in a crisp, cool-climate style: green apple, lemon and ripe pear, with a light stony edge rather than butter or heavy richness. Bright acidity keeps it lively through a clean, refreshing finish. Think closer to Chablis than to a plush New World Chardonnay, and an easy partner at the dinner table.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
