This is Pinot Blanc made with a Burgundian mindset: dry, light on its feet and built for the dinner table rather than the tasting bar. Carsten Saalwächter runs the family estate Paul Christian Saalwächter founded in 1853. He makes Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc from limestone-rich soils, and the aim is elegant, food-friendly wines. His vineyards sit in and around Ingelheim in cool northern Rheinhessen. Many of the parcels are flat and windswept. That's where the house's bright, firm acidity comes from. The 2024 is organically farmed, crisp and light-bodied. It drinks easily on a weeknight but still shows real care in the making. If you want a Burgundy-style white that doesn't need a special occasion, this is a very good place to start.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Weisser Burgunder is from a co-plantation of Pinot Blanc and around a fifth of Chardonnay, on north-facing Tertiary limestone in the sites of Höllenweg, Kreuzkirche, Lottenstück and Steinacker, all in Ingelheim. Yeasty suppleness on the nose holds tender, ripe white peach flesh, fresh double cream, lemon and a more distant hint of ocean and sandalwood. The freshness delves deep into salty stone, is concentrated and bright, framing the smooth, yeasty midpalate with citrus. Lovely." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"Pressed with some percentages of co-planted Chardonnay, the 2024 Weisser Burgunder opens with an intense and elegant bouquet with pencil shaving aromas from the large Assmann oak vats. Saline and pure on the palate, this is a dense and minerally tensioned Ingelheim Burgundy with intense and textured fruit and a long, lemony finish with grip and lemon bitters. This is another spectacular 2024 from Carsten Saalwächter. Tasted as a sample ready for bottling in April 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Saalwachter

Carsten Saalwächter is being called one of Germany's most exciting young winemakers, and he runs a historic vineyard that Paul Christian Saalwächter founded in 1853. Located in Ingelheim in the Rheingau, it's on limestone-rich soils that give wines precision and complexity. Carsten makes elegant, gastronomic Burgundy-style wines from Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, plus slate-grown reds from Assmannshausen. Natural winemaking meets German precision.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
