A quiet new Piedmont project with serious hands behind it: the wine is made by Francesco Rocca, son of the well-known Barbaresco producer Bruno Rocca. San Barnaba started when brothers Roberto and Giovanni Pasquero, real estate professionals in the region, bought a few plots and brought in their friend Francesco to run the cellar. Their base is Serralunga d'Alba, with more parcels in Serra (La Morra) and Monvigliero (Verduno). They keep a low profile, too: when their importer first visited, the estate had no website and no social media at all. The house style is hands-off. There's no temperature control and no filtering, and they keep sulfur use low. As a rule at the house, the skins stay with the juice for a long time, until the tannins start to soften. Next to their Barolo, this Nebbiolo is the easy way to get to know a producer most people haven't found yet.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Langhe Nebbiolo profile: red cherry, violets and hints of tar and dried herbs, with a medium body. It typically has bright acidity and firm but approachable tannins, softened by the house's long skin contact, and a dry, savoury finish. Think of a younger, easier-going Barolo.
