Here's a dry grand cru Riesling that has had more than fifteen years in bottle, from the vineyard where Schafer-Frohlich got its start. Most of us drink Grosses Gewächs young, so a 2007 is a real chance to see what this site turns into with time. Felseneck means "rocky corner," and the name fits. It's a due-south slope in the Ellerbach, a side valley of the upper Nahe, rising from 250 to 310 metres up to a high plateau. The ground is mostly Upper Rotliegend rock mixed with blue Devonian slate, white-grey quartzite and basalt scree. Those stony soils warm up quickly and drain well. The family has grown wine on the Nahe for more than two centuries, and they say Felseneck's calling card is finesse and many-layered slate minerality. This is the site the estate started with.

"Blackcurrant, lemon balm and a floral twist on the nose. Dense and rather full citrus fruit flavors are juicy and invigorating. A long, concentrated finish highlights this wine's depth and minerality." —Joel B. Payne

More about Schafer-Frohlich

For a long time, Tim Fröhlich's name has been synonymous with quality Riesling from the Nahe. These wines are as exceptional as they are exciting. While what's being made is undeniably a most classical expression of what Riesling can and should be, Schäfer-Fröhlich's wines are made naturally from spontaneous fermentation, by people who care about wines that express the mineral character of their terroir, people who care about dry Riesling... all forward-thinking ideas. Tim Fröhlich's wines are not only special as a result of his winemaking prowess, but also for the terroir he has inherited. The estate's holdings include vineyards of volcanic soil (pretty rare for Germany), as well as the much-prized Blue Devonian slate that characterizes the soil in GG vineyards throughout Germany. Again, the magic of this producer comes from having one foot in tradition while stepping forward with his eye toward what might excite people next.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-fried trout with brown butter and almonds; roast pork loin with apples; choucroute garnie; Wiener schnitzel with potato salad; aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic dry Nahe Riesling profile: peach, lemon and a smoky, flinty slate minerality, held together by firm, bright acidity. Grosses Gewächs from stony sites like Felseneck usually has a fine, medium-bodied texture. With time in bottle it tends to pick up notes of honey, toast and petrol, and it finishes long, savoury and dry.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
