You don't often come across a Beerenauslese with two decades in bottle from a steep Nahe grand cru, and at 375ml it's an easy one to open. Beerenauslese means "berry selection," and Halenberg suits the style. The estate says its old vines there are under heavy stress and ripen small, very aromatic berries. The slope lies just east of Monzingen at 160 to 220 metres, faces south and south-west at gradients up to 70%, and sits on a stony conglomerate of blue-grey slate and quartzite that warms easily and makes it a rather dry site. Tim Fröhlich made this wine ten years after his first vintage in 1995. Back then Bockenau, the estate's home village, wasn't known for noteworthy wines, and it was Helmut Dönnhoff who pointed an importer toward the young Fröhlich. Low yields and strict wild-yeast fermentation are the house rule, and the estate says a dark, pure spice runs through its Halenberg wines. The twenty years of cellaring are already done for you, and that's a big part of the appeal.

More about Schafer-Frohlich

For a long time, Tim Fröhlich's name has been synonymous with quality Riesling from the Nahe. These wines are as exceptional as they are exciting. While what's being made is undeniably a most classical expression of what Riesling can and should be, Schäfer-Fröhlich's wines are made naturally from spontaneous fermentation, by people who care about wines that express the mineral character of their terroir, people who care about dry Riesling... all forward-thinking ideas. Tim Fröhlich's wines are not only special as a result of his winemaking prowess, but also for the terroir he has inherited. The estate's holdings include vineyards of volcanic soil (pretty rare for Germany), as well as the much-prized Blue Devonian slate that characterizes the soil in GG vineyards throughout Germany. Again, the magic of this producer comes from having one foot in tradition while stepping forward with his eye toward what might excite people next.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts; foie gras terrine with brioche; apricot or peach tarte tatin; crème brûlée.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Riesling Beerenauslese profile: honey, apricot, candied citrus and dried peach, with botrytis richness and a dark, slaty spice. It is typically lusciously sweet and concentrated, yet Riesling's bright acidity keeps it lively through a long finish, and mature examples pick up marmalade and caramel notes. Think Sauternes with more tension and less weight.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
